"My Life in France" is Book Discussion for August 6

The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's August selection is "My Life in France" by Julia Child, assisted by her great-nephew Alex Prud'homme.  With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, Prud'homme completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The result was Julia Child's bringing her joie de vivre—and classic recipes—to American kitchens for decades. Join the discussion on Monday, August 6, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).

New members and one-time visitors are welcome. For more information, call the library or visit www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org.

"Chatham Plein Air"  Art Exhibit (July 2 - July 28)

The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org)  will feature art by members of Chatham Plein Air. The paintings, inspired by nature and our local rural landscapes, can be viewed through July in the Reeves Gallery at the library, 158 West St., Pittsboro (542-3524), during library hours (Mon 10-6, Tue10-8, Wed 10-6, Thu 10-6, Fri 10-6, Sat 9-5).

"En plein air" is a French expression which means "in the open air," and is used to describe the artist's technique of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors. Painting outdoors offers ever changing possibilities and challenges the artist to concentrate every sensory nerve on the information in front them, exploring their subject while ignoring nature's and human distractions.

The Chatham Plein Air exhibit, the third annual sponsored by The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library, brings together fifteen artists working in a variety of medium including pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors. The uniqueness of this exhibit is that although the artists meet to paint each week at the same location, each painting depicts the artist's own personal, unique sense of place.

Chatham Plein Air was organized three years ago by Studio Tour Artist, Cindy Bainbridge. Rita Baldwin, another of the original members, will be featured as a new artist on the Chatham Studio Tour during the Chatham Artists Guild New and Returning Artists Exhibit in the Reeves Gallery in Oct. through Nov. Other Chatham Plein Air members whose work can be viewed at the current library show are: Bonnie Seyford, Phyllis Stephens, Dan Vaughan, Anne Johnson, Wendy Musser, Jane Lamm, Patricia Pittman, Kim Werfel, Karen Meredith, Laura Azzi, Nerys Levy, Ann Hair, and Jean Scholz.

Chatham Plein Air meets every Tuesday morning at locations in and around Chatham County. For more information contact Cindy Bainbridge (444-4701) or email mompom@earthlink.net.

If you have an interest in exhibiting your artwork or have questions about the exhibit, please contact Leslie Palmer, Gallery Coordinator. (LesPalmer@aol.com or 919-929-9268).

Collaboration is Theme for Friends Fundraising

The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) and Chatham Marketplace (www.chathammarketplace.coop) collaborated for a 1%  Monday on May 7th.  This was the third in a series of community collaborations in support of the new Chatham Community Library. The first was a Burrito Bash! at the Pittsboro General Store in February, while the second was the Friends' Community Read Finale in April, which featured a presentation of Because of Winn-Dixie by Ellen Bland's CCCC Readers Theater Class, funded by a grassroots grant from the Chatham County Arts Council, a partner of the North Carolina Arts Council.

The next collaboration will be with The Abundance Foundation (www.theabundancefoundation.org), Saturday, September 15, at the Piedmont BioFuels plant in Pittsboro.

1% of the proceeds of all food and grocery items purchased went toward the new Chatham Community Library scheduled to open on the grounds of Central Carolina Community College in early 2009. It was a day of fun, food, and information.

Storyteller, Calista Moon, spun her magic with the preschool set, Jamie Fiocco, Manager of Fearrington's McIntyre's Bookstore gave an exciting talk on local authors, John Tilford shared his guitar playing talents and local author, Louise Hawes, spoke of her new book on short stories, Anteaters Don't Dream, and gave practical advice on writing.

The Friends thank the Chatham Community for supporting this event and Mary Da Mare, Manager of Chatham Marketplace, for hosting this Co-op event.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" is Book Discussion for July 2

The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's July selection is "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, author of "The Kite Runner."  Hosseini packed the Fearrington Barn to bursting during his visit for the 2005 Community Read finale.  "A Thousand Splendid Suns" has received terrific reviews, even from those curmudgeons at Kirkus. "A fine risk-taking novel about
two victimized but courageous Afghan women, another artistic triumph, and surefire bestseller, for this fearless writer." Join the discussion on Monday, July 2, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).

"Painting Memories"  Art Exhibit (June 1 - June 30)

The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) is pleased to to present "Painted Memories - treasured moments spent lost in the creative process." Paintings and drawings by artists of Galloway Ridge at Fearrington can be viewed through June in the Reeves Gallery at the library, 158 West St., Pittsboro (542-3524), during library hours (Mon 10-6, Tue10-8, Wed 10-6, Thu 10-6, Fri 10-6, Sat 9-5).

The exhibit affirms the time-honored role of elders as bearers of history and culture by using the power of the arts to transmit their stories and life experiences. Viewers will share treasured moments with the artists and look beyond the artwork to discover the influences art has had in their lives. Each painting holds a legacy, captured life experiences and memories to be honored.

Among the exhibiting artists are those who have gained professional recognition, artists who have spent their leisure years creating art for personal enjoyment, and others for which painting and exhibiting is an entirely new experience: Helen Kotsher, Henry Cope, Florence Johnson, Maggie Love, Joanne Lott, John Steenstra, Mary Granger, Claire Parker, Cynthia Chalmers, Jeanne Cooper and Diana Hsieh. Please see the exhibit program, at the gallery for the complete listing of artists.

Art classes at Galloway Ridge introduce students to the empowerment of self expression, offering opportunities for continued learning, creative expression, discovery and growth. The artists-in-residence group, Primary Colors, allows both experienced and novice artists to share their artistic interests, techniques and appreciation.

If you have an interest in exhibiting your artwork or have questions about the exhibit, please contact Leslie Palmer (LesPalmer@aol.com or 919-929-9268).

"King Leoplold's Ghost" is Book Discussion for June 4

The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's June selection is "King Leoplold's Ghost" by Adam Hochschild.  In the 18800s, as the European powers were carving up Africa, King Leopold II of Belgium seized the vast and mostly unexplored territory surrounding the Congo River.  Paul Theroux said of this book, "Much more than a book about Africa, it puts European and American history and human rights into perspective. It is a chronicle of true heroes and despicable villains and one of the strangest and most violent episodes of empire the world has known."  Join the discussion on Monday, June 4, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).

The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's May selection is "One Thousand White Women," by Jim Fergus. An American western with a most unusual twist, this is an imaginative fictional account of the participation of May Dodd and others in the controversial "Brides for Indians" program, a clandestine U.S. government-sponsored program intended to instruct "savages" in the ways of civilization and to assimilate the Indians into white culture through the offspring of these unions. Join the discussion on Monday, May 7, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).

Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library's Community Read Festival 4/27-4/29

Each year the Friends of the Pittsboro Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) chooses a book for the entire community to read together. This year's choice is "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo.  With this year's focus on children's programs, the Community Read features a wonderful weekend of events to celebrate this award-winning novel. There's something for everyone, no matter how old or young. All three events are free and open to the public.  Programs will be funded in part by a Grassroots Art Grant from the Chatham County Arts Council, a partner of the North Carolina Arts Council.

Friday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m.: Ellen Bland and her Readers' Theater Class perform excerpts from the book in the CCCC Multipurpose Room, Pittsboro campus. Seating is limited, so be sure to get your free tickets in advance from the Pittsboro Library, at Chatham Marketplace, or McIntyre's Fine Books.

Saturday, April 28, 3-4 p.m.: Kids art class with Kim Greene at the library. This is also free, but advance registration is strongly suggested. Sign up at the library.

Sunday, April 29, 1-3 p.m.: "Winn-Dixie Fest" at the CCCC Walking Trail. Also free and open to the public. Register your dog for the Winn-Dixie act-alike contest, then take part in the dog parade along the THANKS trail. Make a "dump garden" or recycled art sculpture.  Purchase snacks, with proceeds going to future Friends programs, and dhat with the Friends about the new community library, soon to be built there.  Fun for the whole family!  All dogs must be good citizens, not aggressive, must be leashed, and must be up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. Rain date is Sunday, May 6.

Pick up a copy of "Because of Winn-Dixie" at a Chatham library and read it aloud with your family. Grab a set of the CDs and listen to it in your car. If you must skip the printed word, check out the movie on DVD. As always, Chatham residents pay nothing extra to borrow these items from their community libraries.

"Celebration of Art" Art Exhibit April 3 - April 28

The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) is pleased to present "Celebration of Art" by five artists from Governors Club: Shirley Bacher, Betty Franklin Cohen, Karen Meredith, Carolyn Schrock, and Ginny Ware. The watercolor, pastel, and oil paintings will be on display through April in the Reeves Gallery at the library, 158 West St., Pittsboro (542-3524), during library hours (Mon 10-6, Tue10-8, Wed 10-6, Thu 10-6, Fri 10-6, Sat 9-5).  The public is invited to view the exhibit at the library and attend a reception to meet the artists at nearby Rosemary House Bed & Breakfast Tuesday, April 3rd from 7 to 9 PM.

Diverse styles, media and techniques come together in a celebration of the artist in each of us.  Five Governors Club artists share their unique and personal creative approaches:

Shirley Bacher's pastels are done in the style called "contemporary impressionism."  "I do not wish my painting to look like a photograph and although I have experimented with abstract representation in the past, I would rather paint everyday scenes from the perspective of the marvelous ways light sometimes hides, sometimes illumines objects.  I paint what I see." Shirley is a member of the Southeast Pastel Society and the Southeast Texas Pastel Society where her paintings have been accepted into their international juried shows.

Betty Franklin Cohen experimented with many mediums before deciding on watercolor as her main focus. "Painting landscapes and botanical subjects gives me a wonderful feeling of connection to the world of nature."  A graduate of Rutgers University, Betty minored in art and archaeology and completed a two-year museum studies course. She received an MA from the Institute of
